He finally cut the cable and got himself an Amazon Fire device: a Fire TV, Firestick 4k, etc. Good news! Regardless of the device you used, there is a ton of free content available. You don’t need to sign up for a bunch of paid services. You can, obviously, but you don’t have to. ———- See our full Fire TV review here:

For Amazon Fire TV, we will review the apps. I will not take a tour of the interface or review the devices themselves, I will only look at the 10 best free apps. First, how to find your applications. On the home screen, scroll down to “Your apps and channels” and select “View all”. That brings you to a grid layout of all the apps on your Fire TV. I can also do that by holding down the Home button on the remote, and it shows me the grid view there. This is how I locate these applications. If you want to download apps, go to the “Applications” tab at the top and scroll down. There is no search function here, unfortunately. But you can long press voice search and search that way. Once you’ve downloaded one, it will appear in your app list. Now that we know how to download apps, let’s go back to the grid view and start with our top 10. 1. YouTube You may be saying, wait, that’s obvious. Well, not necessarily. ONLY made available on Amazon Fire TV again. So now you can get your YouTube app on your Fire TV. And I would say that this is the most important application on your TV. And once you log in, you can search for things like you would on YouTube. 2. ExpressVPN This is not an application where you will find content, but it will be very important if you use other applications to view content that depends on your location. For example, with MLBTV, NBATV, or similar applications that only allow you to watch “off the market” games. Even if you want to see your hometown team, they won’t let you. But with something like ExpressVPN, you can mask or change the location that you get your data from. 3. Sony Crackle Sony Crackle is a streaming service on demand much like Netflix. The difference is that it has advertising, so it is free. So if you go to Crackle, you can either log in if you want to create an account or skip that and search for content. It is structured like Netflix with different genres. But once you get in and start looking, you will have advertising. 4. Pluto TV Pluto TV is an ad-supported live television network. You get over 100 channels to browse and have a lot of great shows and movies. You will find a lot of, what I would call, “B-Team content” from the Viacom channels. You can get movies, TV shows, Stadium (a sports network where you can watch “off the beaten track” sports equipment), but it’s all free, ad-only, just like Sony Crackle. 5. NASA TV NASA has a broadcast network, who would have thought ?! And it’s great! If you like NASA and space stuff, come here and you can see NASA live, they have the latest images and videos, there are interviews. This is all fantastic! If you like this type of content, this app is wonderful! 6. Rakuten VIKI This was a big surprise for me. I discovered this when I was looking for apps on Apple TV, thankfully it’s available on Fire TV too! VIKI is Asian television with fan-written subtitles. They translate and subtitle it and leave it here for you to watch. 7. Hoopla Hoopla is based on a library. It is a public library application. Hoopla and Kanopy have a lot in common. 8. Kanopy Similar to Hoopla, this is a public library app. You can log into Kanopy with your local library card (most local libraries will register through Hoopla or Kanopy). So you can go in here and see amazing free content based on your library card! 9. TED You are probably familiar with TED, but you may not know that they have an app where they have collected all of their content. If you enjoy TED talks, this is an absolute no-brainer. 10. PBS & PBS KIDS These are cool because you have to log in using Facebook after they provide you with an activation code. The reason you need to log in is because it is based on your local PBS station and content. Similarly, PBS KIDS has the same login and activation process. If you have children, this is a must. My kids love it! There are many other apps, just google them. I’m not going to go over them, but you can load apps on your Fire TV. How to load sideways? Go to “Settings”, then to “My Fire TV”, go to “Developer Options” and make sure “Apps from Unknown Sources” is ON. If you have any questions about the apps we liked, or if you have any recommendations, let us know in the comments below! .
