GoDaddy discovered “strange activity” in the “managed WordPress hosting environment,” according to the document, and launched an investigation. After finding the intrusion, he enlisted the help of an IT forensic team and also alerted the police. According to the lawsuit, the attackers gained access to the “legacy code base provisioning system for managed WordPress” after using “a hacked password” to gain unauthorized third-party access. The investigation is still ongoing, despite GoDaddy’s claim that it “blocked the illegal third party” when it was discovered. Access is believed to have started on September 6, 2021, approximately two months before GoDaddy identified the incident. According to the complaint, “nearly 1.2 million active and inactive managed WordPress clients had their email address and customer number exposed.” Email address theft is a serious problem because it increases the possibility of phishing attacks, in which scammers send users emails in an attempt to trick them into revealing their other account information. Also exposed was the “initial WordPress admin password that was set at provisioning”. “We reset those passwords if those credentials were still in use,” the document says. “Database and sFTP usernames and passwords were exposed” for active clients, according to GoDaddy, who claims to have reset both credentials. The Secure File Transmission Protocol (sFTP) enables organizations and businesses to access and transfer files over a network. Finally, “the SSL private key was exposed” for some active clients, and GoDaddy is “in the process of issuing and installing new certificates for those clients.” The SSL private key is vital as it is part of the website’s SSL (Secure Sockets Layer) certificate. This is what connects the website to the Internet and authenticates it. The investigation is still ongoing, according to the company, which is “contacting all affected customers individually with accurate data.” Customers can also use the company’s help desk to contact them.
