Symmetry: Purpose-built cloud for SAP workloads with SUSE and HPE

As a provider of enterprise cloud services, Symmetry needed an operating system to support its SAP HANA offering. The company found that SUSE Linux Enterprise Server for SAP Applications was the right operating system to support its SAP HANA solution along with HPE hardware, which was the right choice for customer service Overview of New England Biolabs Symmetry has provided the most high-quality cloud, hosting, and IT Managed Services since 1996. Due to Symmetry’s focus on customer satisfaction, the company leads the cloud hosting and application management industry with an impressive Net Promoter Score (NPS) of 57. The Challenge As a pioneer of SAP cloud hosting and managed services, Symmetry was an early adopter of SAP HANA technology when it was released in 2010. Symmetry needed a stable operating system and scalable to its proprietary SAP HANA cloud to meet growing customer demand for the HA in-memory computing platform NA and to stand out from the competition. “SUSE is a piece of the puzzle for us that delivers guaranteed performance for customers running production SAP workloads.” CHRISTIAN TEEFT | CTO / SENIOR VP OF CLOUD SERVICES | SYMMETRY SUSE Solution Symmetry was familiar with how SUSE solutions work before considering SUSE for SAP HANA. It had already had success with SUSE Linux Enterprise Server for SAP applications for non-HANA workloads. After a series of design iterations between Symmetry’s cloud engineers, infrastructure experts from HPE, and SAP, the company decided to go with SUSE. Since SUSE is SAP HANA certified and has a strong reputation for its ability to run HANA in-memory database operations, Symmetry considered SUSE Linux Enterprise Server for SAP Applications to be the best fit. Additionally, SUSE’s commitment to supporting SAP and developing capabilities that are in line with SAP’s technical requirements made it an easy choice. Symmetry did not seriously consider any other vendor. Matt Lonstine, Director of Client Services at Symmetry, explained the decision to continue with SUSE: “More than a final decision point, it was just a reaffirmation along the way as we continued to work with the product. He was doing what we needed him to do. SUSE and the product are committed to evolving together with HANA and making it the reference platform for HANA.” Out of the box, SUSE Linux Enterprise Server implements and tunes the operating system for SAP applications. This simplifies the implementation of SUSE Linux Enterprise Server for SAP applications. Symmetry’s cloud engineers were able to become self-sufficient in a short period of time thanks to the “SAP-readiness” of the SUSE platform. The availability of SAP application best practice repositories provided a useful resource to ease implementation. Symmetry also chose to implement SUSE Linux Enterprise High Availability Extension and SUSE Linux Enterprise Live Patching, which provide excellent value for Symmetry customers. The High Availability Extension maximizes service availability and virtually eliminates downtime. And Live Patching allows Symmetry to apply kernel fixes without interrupting service. “When you’re talking about a system running an SAP production platform, downtime is a dirty word, more so than in any other IT conversation because it’s the heart and lungs of a company,” Lonstine explained. Because they help dramatically reduce downtime and maintain security, Live Patching and High Availability Extensions are critical to Symmetry’s success as a SAP HANA provider. The Results The solution has performed well after implementation and has delivered at the level of performance customers expect, thus meeting Symmetry’s customer SLAs. Symmetry typically measures success through the lens of its customers, a practice that has earned the service provider an NPS score of 57, a very high score for the IT services industry. A large part of this success stems from the quality of service, performance, and availability of Symmetry’s SAP and SAP HANA cloud and hosting solutions. Christian Teeft, CTO/Sr VP Cloud Services at Symmetry, summed up nicely how SUSE helps Symmetry lead the SAP HANA services industry: “When it comes to performance, SAP either does or it doesn’t. This is how we differentiate ourselves. SUSE is a piece of the puzzle for us that delivers guaranteed performance for customers running SAP production workloads,” said Teeft. “Because we own our own stack, and because we have experts who can tune the Linux kernel and parameters, we are able to holistically optimize performance for our customers.” Teeft added, noting that SUSE is doing this at the hardware level, which is why Symmetry selected it.
